Established in 2009, The Center for Sustainability Initiatives at Franklin (CSI) is a meant to be a cross-campus organization* whose mission is to promote sustainability through research, education, outreach and international collaboration. Since its inauguration student scholars, interns, staff and faculty have collaborated on initiatives aimed at improving the sustainability of Franklin and the greater community.

In addition to the Social Justice and Sustainability Major and Minor, Franklin is also an official partner with the School for Field Studies, which offers summer and semester-long programs in environmental studies and sustainability at several locations around the globe (e.g. Australia, Bhutan, Costa Rica, East Africa, New Zealand and the Turks and Caicos Islands). Franklin credit is guaranteed to students who successfully complete the programs.

Some of our projects have included: a campus garden initiative to construct an organic garden; a review of Academic Travel to develop more sustainable options; an assessment of Franklin's carbon footprint; and the development of curricular collaborations examining catastrophes in a cross-disciplinary perspective.
