The Voice of Steps: Reflections on Dance, Movement and Choreography in the 21st Century

Ballet and Dance seem to be one of the most arcane forms of art, and among the most “high brow” ones. On the other hand, we all are appropriating space by movements, and different social and cultural contexts have an impact on how we are moving within this world. Thus, dance and movement highlight in a specifically poignant fashion what humans do with space, and how we interact with the world around us. This is reflected in the history of the art form: over the past decades the art of dance has broken down barriers between classical dance and other forms of movement, and has opened all kinds of spaces for artistic imagination. The talk gives a short overview to the history of dance in the Western tradition from its  beginnings as entertainment at the French royal court to the present era, before embarking on a discussion of the opportunities of dance, choreographed movement, and improvisation in the contemporary world.
