Fish or Steel: New Evidence on the Environment-Economy Trade-off in Developing Vietnam
Trade and investment liberalization has contributed substantially to the improvement of living standards in developing countries, but the process also puts severe pressure on countries’ natural resources and environment. Examining the determinants of individuals’ investment policy preferences, this study investigates how citizens want their political leaders to balance between economic development and environmental protection. To study how environmental considerations relative to economic factors and investor-specific features shape individuals’ investment policy preferences, we employ a conjoint survey experiment conducted as part of two nationally representative surveys of Vietnamese citizens. Our results show that environmental harm associated with the investment significantly reduces public support for the investment, even if the same investment generates considerable economic benefits to the respondent’s local area.

All are welcome.
We look forward to seeing you there!
