We are proud to highlight the recent release of The American Revolution, the newest documentary by renowned filmmaker Ken Burns, which explores the people and ideas that shaped the founding of the United States, including Benjamin Franklin, the statesman, diplomat, and innovator whose legacy has long inspired our institution.

When Franklin University Switzerland was founded in 1969, its founders chose Benjamin Franklin as a symbolic guide for the university they envisioned: international in perspective, grounded in American educational values, and dedicated to curiosity, engagement, and global understanding. Franklin’s remarkable ability to connect cultures, build consensus, and pursue knowledge across disciplines continues to reflect the principles we uphold today.

Burns’ documentary brings renewed attention to Franklin’s contributions during a pivotal moment in history. His work in diplomacy, science, and civic life offers a powerful reminder of the kind of leadership that remains relevant in the 21st century: leadership that is informed, open-minded, and committed to positive change. These are the same values we strive to cultivate in our students, who come to Lugano from around the world to study, engage, and build meaningful futures.

We congratulate Ken Burns on this important project and welcome the opportunity it provides to reflect on the enduring significance of our university’s namesake. Franklin’s spirit of innovation and international engagement continues to guide our mission and community.

In celebrating this connection, we invite you to explore our own story. Watch the video below to gain insight into the history of Franklin University Switzerland, presented by its founders.
