Dear Franklin Community,

On September 13, 2022, an Iranian woman by the name of Mahsa Amini was taken into custody by the Morality Police of Iran. Days later, on September 16th, Amini died after falling into a coma while in police custody.

Since this tragic event, protests have erupted all over Iran, with protesters demanding an explanation for Amini’s death, and more deeply advocating for the equal rights of women in Iranian society. Many of these protests, and therefore many of the protesters, have been university students and professors championing the fight for equality and freedom from oppression.

We, the Executive Board of the Student Government Association, wish to express our solidarity with this movement, and our support for all those who are fighting for equality in Iran. Although we may be geographically far from Iran, our Franklin Family is close in heart and spirit with the people of Iran and the Iranian diaspora around the world. At Franklin we believe in the pursuit of and support of diversity, equity, and inclusion for all people.

Further, we support any and all people who fight with their hearts so fiercely to protect their basic human rights and achieve equality. Within the upcoming week we will be discussing how we as the SGA can best understand the situation occurring in Iran, and how we as Franklin Family can show our solidarity and support. Should anyone have any questions, comments, or concerns, the SGA is here to listen and support all Franklin students to the best of its ability.

In Solidarity,

The Executive Board of the Student Government Association
