Campus Housing

Student residential life is an integral part of the educational experience at Franklin. Our residences give you the opportunity to experience the challenges and rewards of living independently in a community. The University offers furnished rooms and apartments - many complete with their own kitchenettes - in addition to traditional-style residence hall rooms. These living spaces provide students with privacy and a sense of personal responsibility.

There are eight different residences on or near campus. Each residence is supported by at least one trained Resident Assistant who helps students adjust socially, academically, and personally to living in Sorengo and Lugano. All students living in Franklin residences are covered by third-party liability coverage that protects students if they are held legally responsible for physical injury or damage to someone else's property, but they are not covered for theft of their personal belongings.

Falcon Card

All Franklin students are required to have a student ID Card, the Falcon Card.

The Falcon Card serves as your official identification both on-campus and in the surrounding community. Your Falcon Card also gives you access to the University’s resources on a pre-paid basis (e.g. dining services). You can load new funds on your Falcon Card at any time, and there are benefits if you load funds above a specific amount.

Dining

From regional and international specialties to vegetarian cuisine, Franklin's dining services in the North Campus Dining Hall and the Grotto serve a large variety of healthy, tasty, and fresh options.

The eateries accept cash and credit cards, but ultimately, the Falcon Card is the most convenient way to make payments and avoid ATM and credit card fees.

Meal Plans

All first-year undergraduate students are required to purchase a 1,600 USD / CHF meal plan on their Falcon Card for each of their first two semesters at Franklin (not including summer). Franklin’s meal plan is designed to ensure students always have access to a nutritious meal or a snack between classes. Funds for meal plans are pre-loaded on the Falcon Card every semester upon payment and must be depleted by the end of term. (Unused funds are not rolled over to the next semester and are not refunded.) Be sure to watch your balance and spend down any remaining funds at the end of the fall semester (December) and your spring funds by the end of the spring semester (May). You can pay for your meal plan directly to the Bursar or through Franklin’s online payments service by credit card.

Warning: Mobility by Train

As a result of the derailment in the Gotthard Base Tunnel on August 10, the passenger trains between Ticino and the German-speaking part of Switzerland will be diverted via the Alpine Panorama Route until further notice. Although this journey is picturesque, it will take 60 minutes longer for national traffic and 60-120 minutes longer for international traffic. Since double-deck trains cannot operate on this route, there could be fewer seats available (30% fewer seats available on the weekends and slightly reduced capacity on weekdays).

Our community is encouraged to refer to the SBB website for detailed information and plan for longer train journeys when traveling between Ticino and the German-speaking part of Switzerland.
