Email and Postal Mail

As a Franklin student living on campus, you will have your own on-campus mailbox and email account. Wireless and ethernet internet access across campus help you stay connected. Students can access their email on any of the computers in the library or campus computer labs, and they may use their personal computers through our ethernet or wireless networks.

Our campus-wide wireless network covers all campus buildings, and individual ethernet access points are available in all our residences.

Any mail that is posted to a student in care of Franklin University Switzerland will be placed in the student's on-campus mailbox. Letters and packages may only be sent to Via Ponte Tresa 29 and will be available for retrieval during Reception's regular hours. Parcels that are too large for a student's mailbox are held at the Reception desk.

The Sorengo Post Office is across the street from campus and sells boxes, envelopes, and stamps. Swiss post offices also serve as banks in some ways, and local bills may be paid there.

Students who live on campus can receive mail at the address below:

Franklin App

The Franklin community is excited to introduce a new smartphone app to help centralize resources and streamline communication. Download the app for iTunes and Google Play and check things out! Anyone with the app can view the "visitor" side of things for now. Then, when you get your Franklin username and password this summer, you'll be able to use all of the features as a Franklin student. We'll use the app during Orientation, so it might be helpful to become familiar with it now! The app works with smartphones even when they are only connected to WiFi, so regardless of whether or not you have a phone plan in Switzerland, you'll still be connected with the Franklin community!

Telephones

We strongly recommend that you get a Swiss mobile phone or a SIM card that you can use with your own mobile phone. Make sure your phone is unlocked so it is not limited to your home carrier service and that you can change SIM cards. There are several providers in Lugano – visit the Comparis website to compare mobile phone plans and costs. It’s a good idea to get a pre-paid package due to the high disconnection fee for ending a contract early. Please note that, if you would like to get a mobile phone plan, you will need to wait until your Swiss permit has been processed and delivered. This process is managed by the cantonal immigration office and may take several months, depending on a variety of factors that Franklin cannot control.

Warning: Mobility by Train

As a result of the derailment in the Gotthard Base Tunnel on August 10, the passenger trains between Ticino and the German-speaking part of Switzerland will be diverted via the Alpine Panorama Route until further notice. Although this journey is picturesque, it will take 60 minutes longer for national traffic and 60-120 minutes longer for international traffic. Since double-deck trains cannot operate on this route, there could be fewer seats available (30% fewer seats available on the weekends and slightly reduced capacity on weekdays).

Our community is encouraged to refer to the SBB website for detailed information and plan for longer train journeys when traveling between Ticino and the German-speaking part of Switzerland.
