World Mental Health Day is a globally recognized day which is dedicated to raising awareness and promoting mental health education, support and advocacy. It is celebrated each year on October 10th and serves as a reminder of the importance of mental wellness.

This past October 10th, the Office of Student Life and the Health Services Team hosted a series of talks, events, roundtable discussions and activities throughout the day. These included yoga, guided relaxation, puppy petting, a roundtable on wellness, a professor-led event on stress reduction through movement, gratitude exercises and physical activities.

We all take care of our bodies by doing things like taking regular showers, brushing our teeth and going to the doctor when we feel ill. Far fewer of us take the time to clean our minds or take care of our emotional well-being.

Maintaining good mental health and wellness is crucial during the college years. It sets the foundation for a fulfilling, healthy life and stable, healthy relationships, both with ourselves and others. With the intense academic demands and transitioning into adulthood, students often face unique challenges. Prioritizing mental health and wellness is key, especially during times of high stress or upset. Engaging in regular exercise, practicing mindfulness and seeking social support are proven strategies for reducing stress and anxiety. Balancing academic commitments with leisure activities and self-care promotes overall well-being, but that balance can be elusive and can shift throughout the semester.

Corbin Moro, University Counselor, is available to speak with all students about their mental health. Each student is eligible for two complimentary appointments with the University Counselor each semester. It’s never too early or too late to start clearing your mind and strengthening your emotional health.
