The Social Justice and Sustainability program which has its home in the Division of Arts and Cultures consists of a minor with three tracks in environmental sustainability, economic sustainability and cultural sustainability, and a self-designed major which allows students to create their own interdisciplinary path around a topic of special interest at the intersection of social justice and sustainability. Students in the past have for instance chosen topics in areas such as greenwashing, child poverty, ecocriticism, nature rights, visualizing equity, fast fashion, and trash.

The SJS program, first created in 2014, has of late been growing as an increasing number of Franklin students have turned their interests to issues of sustainability, and embraced the challenge and flexibility of designing their own educational path among the many offerings in sustainability and social justice across the Franklin curriculum. To be able to offer these students the support and breath they need, the Division of Arts and Cultures has this spring formed a new committee consisting of the following eight members: Jean Wu, Director of the Green Office Sustainability Programs; Silvia Piccinelli, Assistant Professor of Environmental Science; Gabriel Gee, Associate Professor of Art History; Elisa Volpi, Assistant Professor, Comparative Politics; Rakhi Mehra, Adjunct Professor International Management, Christoph Kueffer, Affiliate Professor Environmental Studies and Ecology (ETHZ and University of Applied Sciences OST); Caroline Wiedmer, Professor for Comparative Literature; Rossana Galli, Adjunct Professor, Economy.

Any students interested in exploring SJS may reach out to Caroline Wiedmer or any of the new SJS committee members for information.
