Franklin students come from all over the globe, speak many languages, represent different nationalities, foster and express distinct cultures, and uphold various traditions.

Yet they all share the same desires and ambitions. They are explorers, seeking to engage the world with confidence and curiosity. They study international and interdisciplinary relevant topics on humanity, sustainability, innovation, social justice, the future, and much more. They commit to excelling academically to one day land a dream-true professional career. Last but not least, they stand together, support and cheer on one another, and grow up as part of a tight-knit, worldwide community, the Franklin family.

This is their story, and today, Franklin introduces Kristen.

What is your name, where are you from, and what year are you attending at Franklin?

My name is Kristen Abberley. I am Swiss and American and grew up in Connecticut, in the United States. At Franklin, I am a Master of Science in International Management (MSIM) student specializing in Responsible Management and Climate Action, and just graduated last week!

What is your favorite thing about your home country, what is your favorite thing about Switzerland? How would you compare the two countries?

I love the outdoors and have been able to travel to many different places in the United States. This country is always interesting to explore, especially when camping with so many different landscapes and natural environments.

Switzerland is a beautiful country and has always felt like my second home. I have been coming to Switzerland since I was born and am so happy to finally be living here! My favorite part is being close to my family living in Switzerland and spending more time in the mountains together.

How did you learn about Franklin?

My mom had a friend who attended Franklin University Switzerland and I have always enjoyed visiting Lugano, so I decided to research their programs. That is when I discovered the perfectly suited Master's program which is focused on Climate Action and Responsible Leadership.

Why did you choose Franklin?

While I always wanted to earn a master’s degree, I decided to take some time after graduating with my bachelor’s degree in Geology to gain professional experience that would help me decide where to take my career next. It became clear that I wanted to study topics related to climate change and leadership, however, I was having a difficult time deciding between an MBA focused on sustainability or an MS in environmental science.

At this time, I was also eager to see my grandparents and made the decision that now is the perfect time to move to Switzerland so I can spend more time with them.

In addition, I was very attracted to the practical experiences offered by the MSIM, such as working directly with the UN on an internship. I learn most through activities that allow me to experience things first-hand and practice new skills. So this type of experiential approach to learning attracted me, along with the opportunity to focus on the subjects of responsible management and climate action.

When I was considering the program I met with Corinne Young and admired her work! She invited me to sit in on an MSIM activity so that I could experience what the program is like. I joined a zoom meeting led by Pio Wennubst during which he shared the story of Blue Peace and gave students some background on his sustainable financing workshop. Being able to learn about this type of important work also attracted me to the program. It helped me make the final decision to attend the MSIM as an alternative to other programs I was considering.

What is your favorite memory at Franklin so far?

There are so many great memories running through my mind, that it is nearly impossible to choose one. I am a part of the most incredible cohort. I look up to each of my classmates and have made so many great friends.

As a matter of fact, my favorite part of the MSIM is all of the amazing people I have met throughout the program! I have learned so much from my peers and professors. Everyone has been incredibly supportive of one another and we have been able to accomplish a lot of exciting things together.

What are your aspirations for the future, and how is Franklin teaching you to become a successful professional?

The coursework through the MSIM has helped open my mind to many different possibilities. After graduating I would love to take on an educational role related to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and join a sustainability team within an organization. Education and influencing transformation within the private sector are two opportunities that I am passionate about and aspire to influence positive outcomes for the SDGs through.

Franklin's master's program has helped provide the experiences for me to realize these passions and practice new skills. For example, my entrepreneurial spirit has been re-awakened through a current group project that we pitched and explained in Lugano Living Lab’s Speakers’ Corner Workshop – more details here. The startup idea was called Vivido and aims to raise awareness on food production and promote the installment of vertical gardens in city centers. This project began during our Project Management course and has been a great opportunity to apply new skills related to sustainability and reporting in business, design thinking, international management, marketing, and leadership development, among others.

What is the value that you believe mostly represents Franklin and why?

I wouldn’t be able to choose one value. Something that I believe is special about FUS is the out-of-classroom experiences that either happen through the university or separately within the greater community. During the time I have spent on campus, I have always felt that everyone around me is friendly and supportive. A couple of weeks ago, I went to an apero for the gardening club and felt very welcome even though I only knew a couple of people there. I met several students who I haven’t had the chance to meet before and everyone was so nice. I really enjoyed getting to know them more.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Spending time in nature with my friends and family (including my future dog). I imagine myself happy and in a profession where I am an environmental steward, leader, teacher, and learner. I would like to be a part of a team where I can be a mentor, continue learning, and help create a work culture that is inclusive and a lot of fun!

What is your all-time favorite book/movie and why?

While you may be expecting something deep or serious… The original SpongeBob episodes! They are super creative and keep things silly. I think it’s important to have a good laugh.

What other interests or hobbies do you have outside of Franklin?

I love skiing, hiking, and camping. If I’m not in the mountains or visiting family, you can often find me at Parco del Tassino watching the sunset or having a glass of wine with friends!
